BOSTON — Red Sox shortstop Xander Bogaerts showed off his athleticism in the fourth inning of Saturday’s game against the Philadelphia Phillies with a phenomenal headfirst slide.
After hitting a three-run double down the right field line, the Phillies threw home and catcher Carlos Ruiz couldn’t field it cleanly. The ball sailed toward the backstop, and Bogaerts took advantage of the mishap and tried to score. It appeared he would be tagged out, but he avoided Ruiz’s glove and smacked home plate.
Bogaerts entered Saturday’s game third in the American League in batting at .321.
