Red Sox Prospects Show They’re ‘Knocking On Door’ In Spring Training

One of the big storylines heading into spring training was how the Red Sox’s top three prospects would fare, and they got off to a solid start.

Roman Anthony had a small scare, but he, Kristian Campbell and Marcelo Mayer saw game action for Boston to start Grapefruit League action. It’s fun to see the trio with the big league club, but they’re motivated to earn spots on the Opening Day roster.

NESN’s Tom Caron and Lou Merloni reviewed the first weekend of spring training action on the “310 To Left” podcast. Merloni laid out the path for each of the Red Sox’s top prospects to see action at Fenway Park.

“I think all three are in different situations,” Merloni told Caron. “We look at Kristian Campbell and say second base is open. He’s got an opportunity to prove he can be the everyday guy from Opening Day. I think Roman Anthony, and only because of the way this outfield is situated, really coming into camp here to show the staff what he can do. And I think they all have a pretty good idea of what he can do, but you’re always an injury away. Right now, if everybody stays healthy, I can see him starting in Triple-A until they need. But we haven’t seen Wilyer Abreu yet. An injury can happen in the next two to three weeks. He can find himself on Opening Day.

“Marcelo Mayer is a guy who’s a little bit behind, only because of injury. Last year, when all these guys came up to Triple-A, he had the back injury, so he never had a game at the Triple-A level. You’d probably like to see him play at that level a little bit. So all of them at different phases, but trust me, they’re all knocking on the door.”
