Boras credited ownership and Craig Breslow's group
Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow might’ve called Scott Boras more times than any general manager in baseball this offseason, the megastar agent joked.
“Pretty remarkable,” Boras told reporters in Fort Myers, Fla., on Sunday, as seen on NESN. “Might have been 14 or 15 of them.”
The aggressiveness of Breslow and the Red Sox organization ultimately paid off as Alex Bregman signed a three-year deal reportedly worth $120 million.
Boras detailed Boston’s pursuit of his client, peeling back the curtain on some of his discussions with Red Sox owner John Henry and chairperson Tom Werner. Werner called at 3:30 a.m. from London to talk about Bregman, Boras said.
“Persistent discussions, talks. John, Tom, all actively involved in calls,” Boras said. “I think they had their eyes on AB as far as kind of the perfect fit.”
It’s obviously not the first offseason Boras has communicated with Boston, but he did sense a heightened energy this time around.
“There was a bit of a charge, a bit of an onus to really return back to winning,” Boras said.
“I think there was recognition by (Breslow’s) staff. This was a difficult process for teams. (Bregman’s) situation was very much in demand. And I credit them because they had to go through a lot of avenues and trajectories to work out something that fit for both sides.”
Bregman revealed his main questions for the Red Sox centered on the future of the franchise. The two-time World Series champion believes he’ll be able to win in Boston given the organization’s established veterans and up-and-coming talents which represent one of the best farm systems in baseball.
Bregman’s ability to lead those young players, along with his incredible career numbers at Fenway Park, made him well-deserving of an aggressive pursuit.
