Former Red Sox Outfielder Alex Verdugo Finally Finds New Home

Verdugo will start the season in Triple-A

Former Boston Red Sox outfielder Alex Verdugo finally found a new home.

The Atlanta Braves announced Thursday they signed Verdugo to a one-year, $1.5 million deal. The 28-year-old will be optioned to Triple-A Gwinnett.

According to The Athletic’s Brendan Kuty on Tuesday, Verdugo did not receive any major-league offers this offseason. The development surprised his former New York Yankees teammates, and he ultimately saw a significant pay cut from $8.7 million salary last season to join the Braves.

Verdugo had a down season with the Yankees last year. He hit 13 home runs and recorded 61 RBIs off a .647 OPS in 149 games. He played for the Bronx Bombers during their World Series run but had the unfortunate dishonor of being the last out in Game 5.

The ninth-year outfielder would back up Jurickson Profar, Michael Harris II and Jarred Kelenic if he joins the major league roster.
